About SASSA (The Official Agency)
The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) is the official government agency responsible for distributing social grants in South Africa. SASSA was established on 1 April 2005 to create a unified, consistent social grant system across all provinces.
Before SASSA existed, each province managed its own social grants independently, which led to inconsistencies. Now, SASSA ensures all South Africans receive the same level of service regardless of where they live.
Information We Provide
On this website, you'll find helpful information about the various social grants that SASSA administers:
Types of Social Grants:
- Old Age Pension: For elderly South Africans aged 60 and older
- Disability Grant: For people who cannot work due to a disability
- Child Support Grant: To help caregivers provide for children
- Foster Child Grant: For foster parents caring for children
- Care Dependency Grant: For caregivers of children with severe disabilities
- Grant-in-Aid: Extra support for people who need full-time care
- War Veterans Grant: For military veterans
SASSA's Impact on South Africans
SASSA plays a vital role in fighting poverty and supporting vulnerable South Africans. Every month, the agency reaches millions of beneficiaries across the country.
Who SASSA Helps:
- Elderly people who cannot support themselves
- People with disabilities who cannot work
- Children from families struggling with poverty
- Foster children and their caregivers
- Children with severe disabilities who need full-time care
- Military veterans who served the country
Social grants make a real difference in people's lives. They help families buy food, pay for education, access healthcare, and meet their basic needs. For many households, grants are the main or only source of income.
SASSA's Core Values
SASSA operates according to these core values:
Respect and Dignity
Every person is treated with respect, regardless of their circumstances. All beneficiaries deserve dignity and compassion.
Fairness and Equity
The same rules apply to everyone. All South Africans who qualify for a grant should receive it, regardless of where they live or who they are.
Accountability
SASSA is responsible for public money and must use it wisely. The agency works to prevent fraud and corruption.
Efficiency
SASSA strives to process applications quickly and pay grants on time, constantly looking for ways to improve services.
Accessibility
Services are designed to be accessible to everyone, including people in rural areas, people with disabilities, and people who speak different languages.
How SASSA Operates
SASSA operates through a network of national, provincial, and local offices throughout South Africa:
National Office
The national office in Pretoria sets policies, manages the overall budget, and ensures consistent service across the country.
Provincial Offices
Each of South Africa's nine provinces has a provincial office that manages SASSA services in that province.
Local Offices
There are hundreds of local offices across the country where people can apply for grants, update their information, and get help with any issues.
Mobile Units
In remote areas, SASSA mobile units visit communities to help people who cannot easily reach an office.
Helpline
The national toll-free helpline (0800 60 10 11) provides information and support in all 11 official languages.
Fighting Fraud and Corruption
SASSA takes fraud very seriously. Social grants are meant for people who genuinely need support, and fraud takes money away from vulnerable people.
How SASSA Prevents Fraud:
- Regular checks to ensure beneficiaries still qualify
- Biometric verification (fingerprints) to confirm identity
- Investigation of suspicious claims
- Partnerships with police and other agencies
- Encouraging the public to report fraud
Reporting Fraud:
If you know about grant fraud, it can be reported by calling 0800 60 10 11 or visiting the nearest SASSA office. Reports can be made anonymously.
Rights of Beneficiaries
As a grant beneficiary or applicant, individuals have certain rights:
- To be treated with respect and dignity
- To apply for a grant for free - no one should charge fees
- To receive clear information in a language they understand
- To have applications processed fairly and within a reasonable time
- To appeal if an application is rejected
- To privacy - personal information must be protected
- To make a complaint if poor service is received
- To receive grants on time each month
If rights are not respected, complaints can be made by calling the SASSA helpline or visiting a SASSA office to speak to a manager.
