Step 2: Gather Your Documents

You will need to bring certain documents when you apply. Make sure you have the original documents, not just copies.

Documents Everyone Needs:

  • Your ID document or birth certificate
  • Proof of where you live (like a utility bill, rental agreement, or letter from a traditional leader)
  • Your bank statements for the last 3 months (if you have a bank account)

Additional Documents You May Need:

For Old Age Pension or Disability Grant:

  • Proof of your income (payslips, bank statements)
  • Marriage certificate (if you are married)

For Disability Grant:

  • Medical report from a doctor (must be less than 3 months old)

For Child Support Grant:

  • The child's birth certificate
  • Your ID and the child's birth certificate must show the same address
  • If you are not the parent: proof that the child lives with you

For Foster Child Grant:

  • The child's birth certificate
  • Court order placing the child in your care

Don't have all the documents? Visit your SASSA office anyway. The staff can tell you which documents you need and help you get them. Find your nearest SASSA office.

Step 3: Visit Your Nearest SASSA Office

You must apply in person at a SASSA office. Bring all your documents with you.

What Will Happen at the Office:

  1. A SASSA officer will help you fill out the application form
  2. They will check your documents and make copies
  3. You will be interviewed to check if you qualify
  4. For some grants, you may need a medical assessment
  5. You will get a receipt with a reference number - keep this safe

Important: The application process is free. You should never pay anyone for help with your application.

Step 4: Wait for Your Application to Be Processed

After you apply, SASSA will review your application. This can take up to 3 months, depending on the type of grant.

How to Check Your Application Status:

  • Call the SASSA helpline: 0800 60 10 11
  • Visit your nearest SASSA office with your reference number - find locations here
  • SMS "Status" to 32248

What if your application takes longer? If it has been more than 3 months, contact SASSA using your reference number to find out what is happening. Check our FAQ for common processing questions.

Step 5: Get Your Grant

If your application is approved, SASSA will tell you how to collect your grant money.

Ways to Receive Your Grant:

Bank Account: The money is paid directly into your bank account on the payment date each month. This is the safest and easiest way.

SASSA Card: If you don't have a bank account, you will get a SASSA card. You can use this card to withdraw money at ATMs or certain stores.

Cash at a Pay Point: In some areas, you can collect cash at a SASSA pay point on certain days of the month.

When Will I Get My First Payment?

Your first payment will be made in the month after your application is approved. For example, if your application is approved in March, your first payment will be in April.

What If Your Application Is Rejected?

If SASSA rejects your application, they will tell you why in writing. You have the right to appeal this decision.

How to Appeal:

  1. You must appeal within 90 days of getting the rejection letter
  2. Go to your nearest SASSA office and ask for an appeal form
  3. Fill out the form explaining why you think the decision was wrong
  4. Bring any new documents that support your case
  5. SASSA will review your appeal and give you a new decision
